7 Habits of Highly Effective Advertising

Despite the economic meltdown of the past several months, search still seems to be cruising along with barely a hiccup. To be honest, it’s a little surreal. For those of us in the industry, it seems like we’re in a protective bubble while the world falls down around us. To be sure, the impact has been felt, even in our search world. But all things are relative, and relative to every other marketing channel, search seems invincible.

Googles AdWords Product PlusBox

The Product PlusBox has been a limited test since November 2007, but it seems like Google has expanded the test. I asked Google about this and they told me, it is still a limited beta, to test how effective this is as a way of engaging potential customers for advertisers.

Custom Beanie for Content Pig made by Doubletreble.net

My good friend Mr. Mike over at Double Treble, the place for weekly crochet savings and green eco-friendly yarn, recently hand-crafted me an awesome beanie. Being that I shave my head I seem to notice the colder temperatures sooner than others. :) Now I have nothing to worry about, I’ve got my head covered thanks to Mike. If you guys have any interest in crochet or have afriend that might you should definitely check out his site. He has a better post over there with a few more pictures.

What Obama’s Campaign can teach you about Marketing in 2009

As the campaign progressed many pundits were taken aback by the way in which the candidate had managed to use the net to mobilize supporters in a way never seen before. By allowing supporters to take his core values and messages, tweak them and broadcast them in whatever way they saw fit (such as the video below which was submitted to a YouTube competition), he had made this the first UGC campaign. By taking citizen journalists seriously, he had ensured that the bloggers were on his side. And by utilizing social networks, he had made sure that his supporters were organized in such a way as to maximize his vote.

Updates to some older Posts

Nothing too crazy going on here today, so I figured I’d give a few updates to some older posts. Probably the thing I most want to write about was my Microsoft Live Cashback Search experience. In the post I talked about how great it was, and how I found what I was looking for through Live, bought it now on ebay, paid using pay-pal, all that. Turns out I did qualify for the cashback I just have to wait til Feb. 1st to get it. And for those of you keeping track I made the purchase around Dec. 5th so we’re talking about almost 60 days I’ve been waiting. Quick lesson yes I got an awesome camera at an awesome deal with awesome cashback, I just had to wait 60 days. So basically it was no different than a rebate form, and wait, other than the fact that it was advertised as being instant cashback. Will I use the service again, maybe if all the stars line up, but I will definitely not go out of my way to use the system.

In-House SEO

In-house SEO can be more cost efficient, but it can also be very costly because in-house SEO has many unique challenges. If you are planning to bring SEO in-house in the coming year, be smart. Most companies can’t actually be 100% in-house because there aren’t enough SEO Michael Jordans out there willing to go in-house. Even if you find one, they may not have the political savviness to pull it off.

What are companies doing to bring SEO in-house successfully?

Many are doing 80%-90% in-house, and use an agency for the remaining 10%-20%. We’re seeing a lot of companies hire a decent SEO with 2-4 years of experience, and using SEO Consulting to handle the more senior level SEO challenges. To put into perspective the consulting volume you’ll need, many of our clients fall in this category and use about 15-25 hours per month of consulting, typically landing at the 13-20 hour range. Everything else is managed in-house.
