How to remove the footer in the Tweet This Word Press Plugin

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

As you few loyal and faithful readers know I run the Tweet This plugin and I modified the code somewhat to achieve the results I wanted. In my last post about customizing Tweet This I talked about replacing the icons and editing the text for the links and for the actual Twitter posting. With one of my new blogs More Than Head Shots I installed the newer version of Tweet This and noticed it inserts a footer on all my pages. I’m all for supporting plugin author, and I have made contributions and posts talking about what plugins I use. The fact of the matter is that this footer does not look good in my blog’s layout, and worse than that there is no option to turn it off.  When using some plugins like Akismet you get the option to display a link.  That’s cool, forcing a footer on a my pages, not so cool.

So I fixed the situation my editing the plugin. I won’t go into too much detail but I will show you a quick and easy way to remove the footer from Tweet This.  As I was writing this I actually downloaded the newest version which i think is 1.3.9 and it has the option to not display the footer.  That is what happens when you have a good community. This plugin is constantly being upgraded. Well I finish the post anyways, WHY? You ask…  Well this method will also work for removing those pesky footers from those “free themes” you get but link back to all kinds of spam sites.

What you need to do is edit the plugin php file. In this case we are editing tweet-this.php

Do a search for tweet_his_footer and locate this bit of code:

function tweet_this_footer() {
echo ‘<p>’; if (tt_option(’tt_link_text’) == ” ||
tt_option(’tt_link_text’) == ‘[BLANK]‘) echo ‘Tweet This Post’;
else echo tt_option(’tt_link_text’); echo __(’ links powered by <a ‘ .
‘href=”http://richardxthripp.thripp.com/tweet-this”>Tweet This ‘ .
‘v1.3.9</a>, a WordPress plugin for Twitter.’, ‘tweet-this’) . ‘</p>’;
}

Now if you remove this, the plugin or theme will more than likely break and throw back some sort of error message that tells the world you are trying to remove the footer.

The trick is to remove the footer, but not to remove the call, In order to that edit the code so there is nothing between the start and finish of the code:

Your finished code should look like this:

function tweet_this_footer() {

}

Pretty easy right… Yeah I thought so, now go edit those themes so you don’t have to display that spammy footer.
I’m not a php ninja, but I know enough to be dangerous.  If you have any questions, leave me a comment.

    Thanks, I just made that edit. What do you make of the section of the code that is commented thusly:

    //Big brother is watching.

    It just sounds a bit ominous though probably necessary to the plugin’s operation I presume.

    Also, do you know how we might easily add a Tweet This button to our MySpace layouts?

    Hey, Mark! You’ve made a friend for life. I, like you, wasn’t fond of the Tweet This ad at the bottom of my post. Not so much because I objected to the look of it, just that if I allowed an ad for every plug-in I might install, it WOULD eventually look pretty crappy. (I decided to draw the line w/ Chris Pearson, the creator of my WP Theme — which I’m also using for free.)

    That said, HOW can I show my gratitude? What kind of “plugs” for your product (pun intended) would be most useful for you? I’m very happy with the way it installed, and am thrilled at an app purveyor who would so generously provide assistance which, on the surface, is clearly at your own expense . . . .

    Dan and Elaine,

    You are both very welcome, thank you for checking out my blog. I didn’t like the footer so I figured other site owners wouldn’t like it either.

    Dan, I am working on something for myspace now, just don’t know exactly how it will be implemented, are you looking for something to “tweet this picture and blog” type deal or the whole profile?

    Elaine, just tell other people about my blog and follow me on twitter and subscribe to my rss.

    Thanks Again.

    The intent would be to help me promote an indie film for which I have a Myspace profile that has a trailer and some extra info in the blog as well. So I guess ideally, if it tweeted the entire profile, that’d be best.

    Thanks!
